U.S. Sanctions ICC President Tomoko Akane Over Israel, U.S. Investigations
WASHINGTON – The Trump administration announced sanctions Tuesday against International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and senior ICC lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, citing their roles in investigations involving U.S. and Israeli officials.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions, accusing the ICC of being “corrupt and fatally politicized” and of engaging in what the administration has repeatedly called illegitimate efforts to target the United States and its ally Israel.
The move is the latest in a series of U.S. sanctions against ICC officials since President Trump signed an executive order back in February authorizing punitive measures against the court.
Previous rounds of sanctions have targeted ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, several ICC judges, and deputy prosecutors over the court’s investigation into alleged war crimes by U.S. forces in Afghanistan and its arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The ICC has consistently condemned the sanctions as attacks on its judicial independence.
