Nixon Stuns Florida: Socialist, Anti-Israel Democrat Wins Senate Primary
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (VINnews) — The most surprising turn of events in Florida’s primary Tuesday night came in the Democratic U.S. Senate race, where state Rep. Angie Nixon pulled off a stunning upset over Alexander Vindman.
Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat and progressive who has been described as a democratic socialist, defeated Vindman for the Democratic nomination and will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the November special election.
Nixon has also emerged as one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken critics of Israel. She has advocated for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and introduced a resolution in the Florida House calling for a cease-fire and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Her victory is particularly striking because Vindman entered the race with significantly greater national recognition and financial resources. Axios had described Nixon as the underfunded candidate trying to close the gap with Vindman heading into the primary.
Instead, Nixon delivered one of the biggest surprises of Florida’s primary night.
Her victory now sets up an unusual general election matchup against Moody, a Republican senator seeking to hold the seat for the remainder of former Sen. Marco Rubio’s term.
For Florida Democrats, Nixon’s nomination represents a sharp turn toward the party’s progressive wing — and puts a candidate with strong positions against Israel on the November ballot in a state that has become increasingly Republican in national elections.
