The Department of Homeland Security says New Jersey has agreed to cooperate with a federal review of voter registration records aimed at identifying potential noncitizen registrations, although Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration has not publicly confirmed the development.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said New Jersey Secretary of State Dale Caldwell informed the department that the state would participate in efforts to verify voter records. DHS has previously said it identified approximately 35,000 New Jersey registrations as potential matches involving noncitizens, though officials have stressed that the figure represents records requiring further verification and does not establish that those individuals are illegally registered or voted.

The development follows weeks of disagreement between the Sherrill administration and the Trump administration over access to voter registration data. New Jersey officials had raised legal and privacy concerns over requests for unredacted voter information.

The state has separately acknowledged that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly registered through the Motor Vehicle Commission because of a system error.

As of Wednesday morning, neither the Governor’s Office nor the New Jersey Department of State had publicly confirmed Mullin’s claim that the state will cooperate with the DHS review.
