We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Yaakov Yitzchok (Yankel) Cohen, a grandson of the famous and legendary Reb Mottel (Kastelanitz) Slonim. He was in his 70’s.
The niftar was born in Yerushalayim of yore, and was raised among its exalted Yidden, including many elevated Slonimer chassidim.
He eventually moved to America, and was a part of the Slonimer chassidus here.
He always had a smile on his face, always filled with happiness, and he loved to feed Yidden. He was an excellent cook, and was especially well-known for his kugels.
“Everyone felt like his best friend, and everyone felt good around him,” recalls a grandchild. “And he had a good word to say about everyone. He was a real Zeidy to everyone…”
A twinkle would come into his eyes whenever he met people, especially his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His meticulously kept up his shiurim, even when he became weaker and his eyesight failed. He would trek to the Slonimer Beis Medrash and to the Mikolayever Beis Medrash in Kensington to learn every night even when it was difficult for him.
Reb Yankel was diagnosed with an illness a few months ago, and passed away Thursday afternoon.
The levaya took place in front of the Slonimer shul on 46th street, and he will be flown to Eretz Yisroel for Kevurah.
