An unidentified man managed to pass two security gates overnight and enter the Knesset building in Jerusalem, where he was ultimately found sitting not far from Speaker Amir Ohana’s office.

The breach was apparently uncovered only after security personnel from the nearby Foreign Ministry alerted the Knesset Guard that a suspicious man had approached the Bank of Israel and asked how to reach the Knesset. Guards then reviewed surveillance footage and discovered that he had already made it inside. At around 2:15 a.m., Knesset security located and detained him. He did not enter Ohana’s office.

According to the Knesset account cited by Israeli media, initial questioning indicated that the man was mentally unstable. He was transferred to police and then for medical observation. No terrorist motive has been reported.

Ohana has ordered the Knesset Officer to appoint an investigating officer to examine how an unauthorized individual managed to penetrate two layers of security and roam inside one of Israel’s most sensitive government buildings before being detected.
