A Toms River police officer is being credited with saving a man’s life after he suffered a cardiac emergency earlier this month.

On August 6, Patrolman Thomas Elwood responded to a first aid call for a man experiencing chest pain. While Elwood was speaking with the man and awaiting EMS, the patient suddenly lost consciousness and stopped breathing.

Elwood, who was the only first responder at the scene at the time, immediately lowered the man to the ground, prepared an automated external defibrillator and began CPR. He also directed family members at the scene to assist.

The AED delivered one shock, and Elwood continued CPR until the man regained consciousness and began breathing on his own.

Elwood remained with the patient, monitoring and comforting him until EMS and paramedics arrived. The man was transported from the scene by ambulance conscious and able to speak.

Toms River PBA Local 137 praised Elwood for his actions, commending him for his quick response and lifesaving efforts.
