Two Israeli Australians were “Free Palestined” at a McDonald’s in Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, this month, with the story breaking Sunday.

The Israelis, identified as Asaf and Matan, returned to the McDonald’s drive-thru to ask about a missing item, explaining that a Quarter Pounder that they had ordered appeared to have been excluded from the order. The employee who took their question denied that the item was excluded.

As the exchange became heated, she asked where they were from. When they said Israel, she said, “Free Palestine.” Asked what she meant by that, she doubled down, repeating, “Free, free Palestine.”

Asaf told a local outlet that he felt “shaken” by the exchange, saying the worker also called them baby killers and accused them of lying about the missing item.

A representative of the franchise confirmed that the employee had been suspended.

“As soon as we were made aware, we took immediate action and the employee has been stood down pending the outcome of our investigation,” the spokesperson said. “McDonald’s sincerely apologizes to the customers for their experience.”

“McDonald’s has a zero-tolerance policy for acts of hate and antisemitism in our restaurants and communities,” she added.

Asaf was relieved that McDonald’s took his complaint seriously but is still wary of returning to the same McDonald’s.

“I think it’s good that they are taking care of that. I’m not scared, but I don’t feel comfortable coming to this place,” he said.
