Amazon is preparing to bring its Prime Air drone delivery service to parts of South Jersey, with plans for a new drone facility in West Deptford Township.
The proposed launch site is located at 240 Mantua Grove Road. According to Mantua Township Police Chief William Murphy, Amazon representatives recently met with local police and emergency management officials and indicated that drone deliveries could begin as early as mid-October.
The planned delivery zone would cover most of Mantua Township as well as the Borough of Wenonah.
Under the proposal, the delivery drones would be permitted to operate from 15 minutes before sunrise until 15 minutes after sunset and would fly at altitudes below 400 feet.
The South Jersey expansion comes as Amazon significantly ramps up its Prime Air program nationwide. The company expects drone delivery to be available in nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026—roughly six times its current reach and potentially serving tens of millions of customers.
Prime Air is designed to deliver eligible packages weighing up to five pounds in as little as 30 minutes. Qualifying products can include groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications and household goods, provided they meet the service’s size and weight requirements.
The service is currently operating in portions of seven states: Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska and Texas. Amazon has also announced additional locations for 2026, including a planned expansion into New York.
Amazon says its Prime Air program is certified under FAA Part 135 regulations. The drones rely on onboard cameras and sensors to navigate, identify obstacles and complete deliveries. According to the company, camera information is processed onboard the aircraft and live video feeds are not monitored by human operators.
For customers, Prime members receive free drone delivery on qualifying orders of $50 or more. For smaller orders, delivery costs $2.99 for Prime members and $4.99 for non-Prime customers.
