A massive fire tore through Mordy’s Shtiebel in Lakewood early Tuesday morning, heavily damaging the Shul before firefighters brought the blaze under control by approximately 7:00 a.m.

The fire broke out shortly after 6:00 a.m. at the Shtiebel, located at 15 Delaware Trail, off County Line Road near the Lakewood-Jackson border. Dozens of firefighters and emergency personnel rushed to the scene as heavy flames engulfed portions of the structure.

B’chasdei Hashem, the Sifrei Torah inside the Shul were saved. Central Jersey Chaverim volunteers were later seen removing the Sifrei Torah from the building in the aftermath of the fire, and they were found to be in good condition.

Mordy’s Shtiebel was established in 2020 in memory of Mordy Greenes a”h and has since grown into a beloved Makom Torah and Tefillah serving residents of the surrounding Lakewood and Jackson neighborhoods.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
