‘PALESTINE 101’: Minnesota College Course Teaches Israel’s ‘Ongoing Genocide’

Aug 26, 2026·2 min read

A private college in Minnesota is offering a sociology course this fall called “Palestine,” which will include discussions of Israel’s “continued territorial expansion” and the “ongoing genocide of Palestinians.”

Macalester College said the course will be taught by sociology professor Khaldoun Samman and will cover “the history of the conflict from the rise of Zionism and resistance to it, including both Palestinian resistance and the contemporary voices of dissenting American Jews.”

“Students will learn and apply concepts such as biopolitics, necropolitics and more, in the context of Israel’s historical and contemporary policies, and will analyze the United States’ regional role,” according to the course description.

On the required reading list for students are How to Sell a Genocide by Adam Johnson and Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal by Mohammed El-Kurd.

Students Supporting Israel, which does not have a chapter at the college, nevertheless called on the institution to drop the course. The group pointed to El-Kurd’s justification of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and his mockery of hostages, as well as his statement that “Zionism is genocidal,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The group also said that the book “argues that focus on condemning Hamas and rising antisemitism distracts from Israeli violence and portrays accusations of antisemitism as a tool used by Israel and Zionists to silence Palestinians.”

“A course that begins by presenting the ‘ongoing genocide of Palestinians’ as fact and assigns materials that ‘dismantle Zionist propaganda,’ dismiss concerns of antisemitism, and rationalize armed resistance does not advance meaningful conflict resolution,” the organization added. “It replaces education with ideology.”
