New York City is under a Travel Advisory today as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to move through the city, bringing the threat of flash flooding and damaging winds.

A Flood Watch will be in effect from noon through 11 p.m., with periods of heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms expected during the afternoon and evening.

Some storms could produce major downpours, localized flash flooding, and damaging wind gusts. While the greatest flash-flood risk is expected north and west of New York City, officials warned that heavy rain and flooding could occur anywhere within the watch area.

Residents are being urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, avoid unnecessary travel when possible, and stay away from flooded roadways. Those living in basements or below-grade spaces should be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if conditions worsen or a warning is issued.

New Yorkers are encouraged to continue monitoring weather conditions and emergency alerts throughout the day as the storms move through the region.
