Slovenia blocked a joint statement by the European Union condemning the Israeli proposal to build more than 1,000 housing units in a section called E1 in Judea, which is in Area C and thus under Israeli jurisdiction.

The move meant that EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas could issue a statement only in her capacity as the high representative of the body without representing all 27 EU countries, blunting its force.

The recently elected prime minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša, who has reversed course on his predecessor’s anti-Israel policies, said that he had taken this action to restore the credibility of Slovenia due to the “disproportionate” amount of criticism that is leveled against Israel for “every move.”

“In fact, we have only removed Slovenia from the vicious circle of losing credibility in the face of constant disproportionate condemnations of Israel for every move,” he wrote on X, slamming the EU for its silence on major atrocities across the globe while focusing its ire on every Israeli announcement about building “some kind of village.”

“While the Brussels bureaucracy remains silent about the extermination of entire villages of Christians in Nigeria, the massacres of its own people by Hamas in Gaza, massacres in Iran or the increasingly frequent anti-Semitic outbursts in Europe, it reacts to every announcement by Israel that it will build some kind of village,” he scolded.

“The use of double standards has brought the so-called EU foreign policy to a state of near irrelevance. While a single word from the US president can cause a change in energy prices, the EU’s empty foreign policy messages do not change or solve anything,” he concluded.

Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs also issued a statement saying, “Slovenia supports respect for international law and an agreed two-state solution that takes into account the legitimate interests of both sides,” arguing that the proposed statement “would not bring added value at this time” because of previous statements on the same matter.
