Following the devastating Belt Parkway crash that killed three teenagers earlier this week, Brooklyn elected officials are calling for stronger NYPD enforcement against speeding, reckless driving and drag racing along the busy highway.

As previously reported by BoroPark24, three teenagers were killed and four others were injured in Tuesday’s crash. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, but speed is believed to may have been a factor.

In response, City Councilmember Kayla Santosuosso and State Senator Andrew Gounardes sent a letter Thursday to the commanding officer of the NYPD Highway Unit, urging the department to increase patrols and take more aggressive enforcement action against reckless drivers and illegal drag racing along the Belt Parkway.

The lawmakers said they are seeking additional information about patrol patterns and enforcement efforts along the roadway, while calling for more visible patrols, stronger monitoring and a clearer explanation of how the Highway Unit is deployed to deter speeding and reckless behavior.

The officials said speeding and drag racing have become ongoing concerns on the Belt Parkway, with Santosuosso saying she regularly hears complaints from constituents about dangerous driving along the parkway.

Santosuosso also said she personally heard vehicles speeding along the Belt Parkway just one night after the deadly crash, raising concern that the same dangerous behavior was continuing almost immediately after three lives were lost.

Most of the Belt Parkway carries a 50 mph speed limit, but concerns over high-speed driving and reckless behavior have persisted for years, particularly during nighttime hours.

The NYPD Highway Unit had not yet responded to these requests, while the investigation into Tuesday’s deadly crash remains ongoing.
