An 11-year-old girl was tragically killed and an 11-year-old boy was injured in a crash involving an electric dirt bike and a pickup truck in Berkeley Township on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Berkeley Township Police responded at approximately 12:45 p.m. to the area of Moorage Avenue and Sherman Avenue following reports of a crash.
Investigators determined that the electric dirt bike, operated by the 11-year-old boy with the 11-year-old girl riding as a passenger, was traveling northbound on Sherman Avenue when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection. The dirt bike then hit the driver’s side door of a Ford F-250 traveling westbound on Moorage Avenue.
The boy was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was treated for his injuries and later released. The girl was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was tragically pronounced deceased from injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene, had a valid driver’s license and showed no signs of impairment, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Berkeley Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
