A passenger ferry overturned shortly after departing from Northern Cyprus, prompting an emergency rescue operation. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone was killed or injured in the incident.

“Around 100 passengers have been evacuated and taken to shore,” the transport minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Erhan Arikli, tells local television.

Arikli says the ferry was “taking on water” as rescue teams worked to assist those aboard.

Officials have not yet determined the ferry’s total passenger count. The vessel had departed from the Northern Cyprus port of Kyrenia and was traveling toward the Turkish port of Tasucu when it capsized.

Television footage from Turkey showed the ferry overturned in the sea, with passengers wearing life jackets gathered on top of its orange hull. The weather appeared calm and sunny, while several other vessels could be seen nearby helping with the rescue effort.

The TRNC is recognized as a state only by Turkey and administers the northern third of Cyprus. The island has remained divided since 1974.
