Dozens of charedi men are expected to arrive at the IDF induction center in Tel Hashomer on Sunday morning as part of a recruitment day for combat tracks in the Israeli military, including the Hasmonean Brigade, Netzah Yehuda and Magen HaNegev.

The recruitment day is taking place against the backdrop of the bitter dispute over charedi military service, as well as a wave of arrests of yeshiva students for continuing to evade military service.

Ahead of the recruitment day, the Badatz of the Eidah Haredis of Jerusalem, the influential rabbinical court associated with the Jerusalem Haredi community, issued a strongly worded letter under the headline “The Young Men Have Been Taken Captive.” The letter called on the charedi public to participate in protests and to work to persuade young men not to enlist.

The rabbinical court said it had received information indicating that a general recruitment day had been scheduled for charedi young men and that many yeshiva students had been summoned for military enlistment.

The Badatz called on kollel students who are able to participate in the demonstrations to “act according to the Torah,” while also urging them to try to convince young men not to enlist.

“Our only strength is through our mouths, to cry out and warn,” the letter stated. It further called on the public to act “in order to persuade young men not to set foot [on this path] and not to throw themselves into a place from which, G-d forbid, none of those who enter will return and they will not attain the ways of a Torah-based life.”

The letter concluded with a call to continue standing “guard over the walls of Judaism.”

The protest took place near the Tel Hashomer induction complex beginning in the morning. The IDF, meanwhile, is preparing to receive the new recruits and ensure that the induction process proceeds normally.

Alongside the recruits and protesters, several politicians arrived at the site to express support for Haredi enlistment.

Among those expected are Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman, The Zionist House – Reservists leaders Yoaz Hendel and Motti Leitner, the chairman of the charedi Public Party. Some of the politicians are expected to make statements at the induction center.
