WASHINGTON (VINnews) — The national average price of gasoline remained above $4 a gallon throughout August for the first time, making the month the most expensive August on record at the pump, according to AAA.

The national average was about $4.08 a gallon Monday, according to AAA data. The monthly average has surpassed the previous August record of $3.97 a gallon, set in 2022.

AAA said gasoline prices have remained elevated largely because of high crude oil prices and continued uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

The elevated fuel costs are putting additional pressure on American consumers at a time when inflation remains a concern. Gasoline prices typically ease toward the end of the summer as demand declines, but AAA said crude oil prices have kept prices at the pump unusually high.

The national average reached $4.10 a gallon earlier this month, the highest level ever recorded for that date, AAA said. The organization said the August monthly average had already surpassed the previous record by Aug. 20.

AAA said gasoline demand has declined, but that has not been enough to offset the effect of higher crude prices. The Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. gasoline demand fell during the weeks cited in AAA’s August reports.

The price surge comes as crude oil markets remain volatile. Brent crude, the international benchmark, climbed above $90 a barrel Monday, while U.S. benchmark crude also rose sharply.

For drivers, the higher oil prices are translating into higher costs for filling up vehicles, adding to household expenses and raising concerns about broader inflationary pressure.

AAA said the national average is expected to remain elevated as the market responds to developments affecting global oil supplies and transportation.
