With students across Rockland County heading back to the classroom, Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services is reminding parents, students, and motorists to take extra precautions as the new school year gets underway.

The department urged children to stop, look, and listen before crossing streets and to remain alert and avoid distractions while walking to and from school. Students traveling by vehicle or school bus are also being reminded to buckle up.

Motorists are being asked to slow down in school zones and remain especially alert for children who may be entering or crossing the roadway.

Officials also encouraged parents to allow additional travel time during the first few weeks of school as traffic patterns adjust to the return of school buses and increased morning and afternoon traffic.

Beyond roadway safety, the department encouraged students to begin the year by being kind and respectful to others, arriving prepared, doing their best, and asking for help when needed.
