The Walmart on Route 37 West in Toms River has received approval for a major expansion that will significantly increase the size of the store and expand its grocery and online-order operations.

The Toms River Township Planning Board granted preliminary and final site plan approval for a roughly 48,190-square-foot addition to the existing Walmart at 950 Route 37 West. The current store spans approximately 131,700 square feet, meaning the project will increase the building’s footprint by more than one-third.

Plans call for additional grocery space as well as a dedicated staging area for Walmart’s online pickup and delivery operations. The project also includes improvements to the parking lot, designated online-order pickup areas, new signage and other upgrades to the property.

As part of the approval, Walmart received several zoning variances related to parking, building coverage, signage, setbacks and landscaping.

State filings previously described additional site work including new loading docks, stormwater management improvements, pavement work and utility upgrades.

No construction start date or anticipated completion date has been announced.
