Federal immigration authorities have lodged detainers against both women charged in the horrific Jackson Township crash that claimed the life of 9-month-old Yitzchok Rosenberg z”l, as new details emerge about their immigration status.

Maria CobonGuzman, 20, of Trenton, the woman accused of driving the vehicle that struck the infant, his mother and his 5-year-old sister outside NPGS on West County Line Road, is a Guatemalan citizen, according to Ocean County Jail records. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has now lodged an immigration detainer against her.

A second ICE detainer was lodged against Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, 22, of Toms River, a Mexican citizen who authorities say knowingly allowed CobonGuzman to operate the vehicle despite being aware that she had never possessed a valid driver’s license.

As Lakewood Alerts previously reported, the horrific crash occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Jackson NPGS.

Prosecutors say CobonGuzman was operating a Ford Fusion when she struck a mother and the baby carriage carrying her two children. All three victims were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where 9-month-old Yitzchok was tragically pronounced niftar. His mother suffered a fractured leg, while his 5-year-old sister suffered scrapes, according to court records cited by NJ.com.

Investigators subsequently determined that CobonGuzman had never possessed a valid driver’s license in New Jersey — or in any other state.

She has been charged with manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle without ever having possessed or been issued a valid driver’s license while involved in a fatal crash, and two counts of assault by auto.

Lazaro-Flores has been charged with knowingly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of death to another. Prosecutors allege that she knew CobonGuzman had no license but nevertheless permitted her to drive the vehicle.

Both women were arrested following the crash and are being held at the Ocean County Jail pending detention proceedings.

An ICE detainer requests that authorities notify federal immigration officials before an individual is released and, under applicable circumstances, allows federal authorities time to assume custody for immigration enforcement proceedings.
