LAWRENCE, N.Y. (Sep. 1, 2026) — Bad weather is heading toward the local area and northern New Jersey, bringing several rounds of strong storms that could make driving dangerous over the next couple of days. Forecasters say a line of stormy weather is pushing in, creating messy conditions on the roads right around the time most people are heading home from work.

The biggest threat is expected later in the afternoon and into the evening hours. While a few light showers could pop up earlier in the day, the heaviest rain, strongest winds, and worst travel conditions will hit between late afternoon and tonight.

Main concerns include sudden downpours that can quickly flood streets, highways, and low-lying spots that do not drain well. Some of the stronger storms could also bring sudden gusts of damaging wind and small hail, which can knock down tree limbs, power lines, and loose objects outside.

Drivers and train riders should plan for delays, slow-moving traffic, low visibility, and standing water on main roadways throughout the evening. Local emergency teams recommend giving yourself extra time to get home, moving outdoor trash cans or patio furniture inside, and keeping your phone charged in case weather alerts go off later tonight.
