Sen. Ed Markey trounced his opponent, Rep. Seth Moulton, in the Democratic primary in Massachusetts Tuesday night, sweeping to victory with 75.9 percent of the vote to Moulton’s 24.1 percent even before all the votes were counted.

“Tonight is a testament to the power of the progressive movement,” the progressive anti-Israel candidate said Tuesday night, noting that he had spoken to Moulton before taking the state. “It is a progressive movement fueled by young people demanding more from their leaders.”

Moulton said he had called the octogenarian candidate to congratulate him and that he supported his opponent fully, saying that Democrats “must stand united this November to protect our democracy and defeat Donald Trump.”

While Markey is the more progressive of the two, having voted to cut military aid and munitions sales to Israel, Moulton distanced himself from AIPAC during his campaign, announcing that he had returned all the funds he received from the pro-Israel lobby and would not continue to receive funding from the group.

“In recent years AIPAC has aligned itself too closely with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government,” he said at the time. “I’m a friend of Israel, but not of its current government.”

Jeff Robbins, a Democratic operative, said in an interview with The Jewish Telegraphic Agency that AIPAC has become a litmus test for Democrats.

“It is clearly the safe thing to do, if you are running for a nomination in the Democratic Party, to aggressively distance yourself from Israel,” he said, adding that this attitude was “reflective of the reality that we have seen play out in spades over the last year, which means that Democrats are “running for the hills about AIPAC and treating it as a boogeyman,” 

“If you want to have a prayer of being elected in a Democratic primary in this country, you had better be able to say, ‘I don’t take money from AIPAC. In fact, I never heard of it before,’” he said.
