In a stunning admission to The Financial Times, outgoing United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that its independent experts are “out of control.”

“We have many [rapporteurs] that are totally out of control, from the point of view of the Secretariat,” Guterres told the outlet, specifically referring to their rhetoric on Israel.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz slammed the U.N. for not firing these rapporteurs in a post on X earlier this week.

“The reality is many Secretariat leaders privately admit the Special Rapporteurs, like Albanese, are out of control and a discredit to the UN, but have failed to hold them accountable even when they violate their code of conduct or abuse their posts to wage lawfare. This is a broken system that must be fixed,” he wrote.

One of the U.N.’s special rapporteurs, Francesca Albanese, who has become infamous for her antisemitic and inflammatory rhetoric, hit back, saying that the secretary-general didn’t say what he said.

“Of course the SG never meant what the pro-Apartheid scavengers spread,” she said in response to a media inquiry on X.

Albanese’s rhetoric was so antisemitic that a number of European countries called for her resignation, and the United States imposed sanctions on her which she has since fought in court.

“Albanese has functioned as Hamas’s de facto spokesperson at the UN,” said UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer. “Iran’s regime and its terrorist proxies routinely praise her. But numerous democracies have called for her removal, condemning her for Holocaust inversion and other ethical violations, making her the first UN human rights official in history to be so denounced. The United States sanctioned her. Guterres called her a horrible person in private. Now Ambassador Waltz confirms it: senior UN officials knew she was out of control. A human rights system that cannot remove its most notorious antisemite is not independent. It is broken.”
