The Village of Spring Valley Board of Trustees has approved Tuesday night a process that would allow motorists to handle traffic plea bargains and reduced-charge settlements by mail, potentially eliminating the need for many people to appear in court in person.

The approval marks the beginning of the process of a new system, with village officials expected to work out how the program will operate and which cases will qualify.

Plea-by-mail programs have recently become increasingly common in local municipalities, including in the Town of Ramapo, giving drivers a more convenient way to respond to eligible traffic violations and, in some cases, resolve reduced charges without making a courthouse visit.

For motorists, the appeal is straightforward: fewer missed work hours, fewer trips to court, and a simpler way to deal with routine traffic matters. For the court system, the process can also help reduce the number of people appearing in person for cases that may not require a full hearing.

Spring Valley’s move now opens the door for the village to develop its own version of the system, with additional details expected as officials move ahead with implementation.
