A Jewish man was punched in the head, robbed and subjected to antisemitic slurs during an apparently unprovoked attack near Manhattan’s Diamond District.

Surveillance footage shows the assailant approaching the victim near West 47th Street and Sixth Avenue, grabbing his hat and striking him hard in the side of the head. The blow reportedly left significant bruising around his temple.

When the victim tried to photograph his attacker, the suspect allegedly grabbed his phone, threw it to the ground and fled.

Two witnesses followed the suspect while the victim contacted 911 and Manhattan Shomrim. Shomrim volunteers coordinated with the NYPD, leading to the alleged attacker’s arrest.

The suspect was charged with felony robbery and assault-related hate crimes but was reportedly released without bail just hours later. The case remains active.

The assault comes amid a disturbing wave of antisemitic violence across New York City.

Recent incidents have included the stabbing of a Jewish man outside a synagogue, an attack on a rabbi walking to synagogue, violence during Shabbat services at Central Synagogue and a vehicle repeatedly rammed into Chabad World Headquarters in Crown Heights.

New NYPD data shows 425 confirmed hate crimes were recorded during the first eight months of 2026, up 15.8% from 367 during the same period last year.

Of those, 229 targeted Jews, an 8% increase from 212 last year. Anti-Jewish incidents accounted for 53.9% of all confirmed hate crimes in the city, despite Jews comprising only about 10% of New York’s population.

While city officials celebrated record-low shootings and murders over the summer, the numbers reveal a frightening reality: overall violent crime may be falling, but antisemitic violence continues to rise.
