The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and local law enforcement agencies across the county will conduct a high-visibility traffic enforcement detail on Friday, September 4, as part of New Jersey’s statewide Goal: Zero initiative aimed at reducing fatal and serious crashes.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Thursday that the coordinated enforcement effort will take place throughout the day and night Friday, ahead of the busy Labor Day weekend.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, 357 people have lost their lives on New Jersey roadways so far in 2026, including 26 fatalities in Ocean County.

Officials said the Friday before Labor Day traditionally marks the beginning of a particularly high-risk travel period, with heavier traffic, increased pedestrian activity, holiday celebrations and a greater concern over impaired driving. The enforcement detail also comes at the conclusion of the summer travel season and the so-called “106 Deadliest Days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

“Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the summer, and with more vehicles and pedestrians on our roads, comes an increased risk of serious crashes,” Billhimer said. “We remind everyone that safe driving is a shared responsibility. Slow down, stay focused, never drive impaired, and make the choices that will get you and everyone else home safely.”

Billhimer said the ultimate goal of the initiative is fewer crashes, fewer serious injuries and zero roadway fatalities across New Jersey.

The Goal: Zero campaign was launched in 2024 following an initiative spearheaded by Holmdel Township Patrolman Matt Menosky, initially bringing together 36 municipalities to target dangerous driving behaviors. Its bright green logo represents high visibility and pedestrian and school safety, while a black mourning band honors those who have lost their lives in traffic crashes.
