130 Years Later: Historic “Se’u She’arim” Composition Performed Again at Kaliningrad Synagogue

During the month of Elul, as Jewish communities throughout Russia prepare for the Days of Awe, a remarkable historic event took place in Kaliningrad, the city formerly known as Königsberg.

The local Jewish community recently marked 130 years since the dedication of the city’s historic synagogue, with an evening that combined Jewish history, music, Torah and a powerful message of Jewish continuity.

The magnificent synagogue, which was completely destroyed during Kristallnacht, was rebuilt eight decades later on its original foundations. Today, the building has once again become a vibrant center of Jewish life, serving the community under the leadership of Mara D’asra Rabbi Dovid Shvedik and Shliach Rabbi Avraham Baruch Deutsch.

Hundreds of community members, public figures and friends of the community filled the synagogue for the special gathering.

The evening opened with remarks by Jewish community president Mr. Eliezer Yermiyahu Flitman, who recounted the rich history of Jewish life in Königsberg and the community’s remarkable revival.

Rabbi Dovid Shvedik then blew the shofar and addressed the gathering, speaking about the extraordinary privilege of maintaining Jewish life in a building with such a profound history.

Certificates of appreciation were also presented to friends and supporters of the community in recognition of their dedication and assistance throughout the year.

The emotional highlight of the evening came when the synagogue choir performed “Se’u She’arim Rasheichem” — “Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates.”

The composition was written by Eduard Birnbaum, the chief cantor of Königsberg, specifically for the dedication of the synagogue 130 years ago.

Hearing the historic composition performed once again, in the very same sanctuary for which it was originally composed, created a powerful connection between the Jewish community of Königsberg of 1896 and the Jewish community of Kaliningrad today.

The performance served as a moving expression of the eternity and continuity of the Jewish people, with the melodies of the past resonating once again within the synagogue’s restored walls.

The musical program continued with stirring violin performances of “Kol Nidrei” and “A Yiddishe Mamme,” adding to the emotional atmosphere as the community prepares for the upcoming High Holidays.

At the beginning of the event, a special letter from Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, was read to the assembled crowd.

In his letter, Rabbi Lazar highlighted the remarkable Divine Providence reflected in the discovery and preservation of the synagogue’s original foundations, upon which the current Jewish community has been rebuilt.

He also pointed to the profound spiritual transformation that has taken place in the building over the course of its history.

“The spiritual transformation this place has undergone—from a synagogue that was formerly liberal to a synagogue that now leads an Orthodox community—is the most profound proof that the Jewish heart always yearns for the pure source.”

The words resonated deeply with those gathered, underscoring the extraordinary revival of Jewish life in a place that had once witnessed the destruction of the city’s Jewish community.

Another highlight came with the opening of a special exhibition in the synagogue’s museum, featuring historic photographs connected to the Baal HaTanya Shul in Jerusalem.

Displayed alongside the photographs was a letter sent in honor of the occasion by Rabbi Moshe Shmuel Deutsch, on behalf of the management of Kollel Chabad.

The letter revealed a remarkable historical connection linking Königsberg, Jerusalem and the Chabad community of Kaliningrad.

Approximately 130 years ago, a prominent philanthropist from Königsberg, R’ Yitzchak Shub, contributed toward the establishment of the Chabad synagogue Ohel Yitzchak in Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim neighborhood.

Today, generations later, the grandson of one of the founders of that Jerusalem synagogue serves as a Chabad emissary in Kaliningrad—the very city from which the philanthropist originated.

The remarkable connection was described as a “closing of the circle,” highlighting the unexpected ways in which Jewish history continues to connect generations and communities separated by thousands of miles and more than a century of history.

Still inspired by the historic gathering, the Kaliningrad Jewish community is now preparing for the upcoming month of Tishrei and the High Holidays.

The celebrations are expected to continue with the welcoming of a new Torah scroll into the synagogue, generously donated by Mr. Eduard Elchanan Migirov of Moscow, in merit and honor of his parents, Avraham and Sarah.

From the historic foundations of the old Königsberg synagogue, Jewish life has once again taken root.

The melodies of a composition written 130 years ago have now been heard again, a Torah scroll is preparing to enter the sanctuary, and a new generation of Jews continues to build upon the foundations laid by those who came before them.

From within the walls of this historic synagogue, the Kaliningrad Jewish community continues to spread the light of Torah and Chassidus throughout the city.
