With the busy Yom Tov season quickly approaching, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited Williamsburg Shomrim headquarters on Wednesday, bringing the city’s top police official together with the community leaders and volunteers who work on the front lines of keeping Williamsburg safe.

A number of leading Askanim attended the gathering, including Rabbi Moshe Indig of the Williamsburg Jewish Community Council and Rabbi David Niederman of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg. Together with Shomrim coordinators, they discussed public safety, preparations for the coming Yomim Tovim, and the close coordination between the NYPD and the Williamsburg community.

Addressing the commissioner, Rabbi Niederman and Rabbi Indig expressed the community’s tremendous gratitude for her visit at such an important time of year and thanked her for the strong working relationship she has maintained for many years between the NYPD and Shomrim. They further recognized the commissioner‘s continued commitment to protecting the Jewish community and ensuring that its security needs receive the attention and resources they require.

Commissioner Tisch thanked the askanim for the warm and generous welcome and spoke about the NYPD’s preparations for the upcoming holiday season, including an increased police presence and additional patrols. The discussion also addressed the continuing threat of antisemitism and other security concerns facing the Jewish community.

The conversation comes as Williamsburg’s streets and shuls are preparing for weeks of heightened Yom Tov activity, with large gatherings and thousands of people moving through the neighborhood throughout the month of Tishrei. That makes close cooperation between police, Shomrim, and community leaders especially critical in the weeks ahead.

Following the meeting, Commissioner Tisch was shown around Shomrim’s command center, where she received a firsthand look at the dispatch system and the operation behind the volunteers’ rapid response to calls across Williamsburg. She was deeply impressed by the state-of-the-art technology, advanced communications systems, and carefully coordinated patrol operation Shomrim has developed to serve its people.

Shomrim coordinators walked the commissioner through the process of receiving calls, dispatching units, and working alongside the NYPD as incidents unfold. The tour offered the city’s ‘top-cop’ a rare behind-the-scenes look at the sophisticated operations of Williamsburg Shomrim.
