Russian President Vladimir Putin held more than three hours of closed-door talks at the Kremlin with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who arrived carrying President Donald Trump’s latest proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The Americans presented “a number of ideas” for a possible settlement. The Kremlin called the discussions highly useful, constructive and unusually candid, while the White House described them as substantive. No breakthrough was announced, and the details of Trump’s proposal remain undisclosed.

Putin told the envoys Russia believes it is making battlefield progress and again stressed what Moscow calls the conflict’s “root causes.” The fundamental gap remains enormous: the Kremlin says its demands for Ukraine to surrender the entirety of four Russian-claimed regions and abandon NATO membership remain unchanged, conditions Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.

Witkoff and Kushner have now left Moscow and are expected in Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia and Ukraine separately agreed to temporarily halt strikes on each other’s capitals around the diplomatic visits, creating a narrow window for Trump’s newest peace effort to move forward.
