President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arrived in Kyiv and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other senior officials as part of renewed U.S. efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The visit followed more than three hours of talks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev. The White House described the discussions as “substantive” and said concrete plans for the next steps were discussed. However, no major breakthrough was announced.

According to Russian reports, Putin acknowledged that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to Kyiv after the meeting, telling them that continued diplomatic contacts were beneficial regardless of what followed.

Zelenskyy said Russian strikes prevented the two American envoys from flying directly into Kyiv, despite Ukraine preparing both Zhulyany and Boryspil airports for their arrival. Witkoff and Kushner were ultimately forced to enter Ukraine by train.

The visit marks their first official trip to Kyiv in their roles as U.S. peace negotiators.

Although Russia and Ukraine reportedly agreed to a temporary pause in attacks on their respective capitals during the diplomatic mission, strikes and fighting continued elsewhere. Ukraine also accused Russia of targeting airport infrastructure ahead of the envoys’ arrival.
