U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee’s recent visit to the Palestinian town of Turmus Ayya has come under scrutiny after local residents accused the delegation of meeting and posing for photographs with individuals they say have histories of supporting terrorism and incitement.

The visit was presented as an opportunity to highlight the realities of life in the area, but critics argue that the carefully arranged tour failed to acknowledge the town’s alleged history of terrorist glorification, attacks against Israelis and hostility toward nearby Jewish communities.

Among those photographed with Huckabee was Abla Al-Kook, a girls’ high school principal whom residents accuse of promoting incitement and glorifying terrorism. Local critics also pointed to other municipal figures who, they allege, have connections to terrorist activity or have participated in attacks against Jews.

Amishav Mellet, a local resident whose brother Benayahu was killed by a terrorist mob just weeks earlier, later addressed an open letter to Huckabee, arguing that the ambassador was shown a heavily curated version of events.

Mellet highlighted several issues he believes were omitted from the visit, including:

• The town’s former mayor, Lafi Shalabi, whom Mellet alleges was involved in assisting the killing of Yehuda Guetta and was later selected to lead the municipality while imprisoned.
• Municipal council member Abu Samra, whom Mellet identifies as a convicted and released terrorist who has allegedly posted incitement and been involved in violence and property attacks against Jews in the Shiloh-area communities.
• Numerous monuments throughout Turmus Ayya honoring terrorists, as well as imagery depicting all of Israel as part of a Palestinian state.
• Alleged involvement by Al-Kook in promoting terrorism and participating in violent confrontations with Israelis and security forces.
• Repeated incidents that Mellet says have occurred in and around the town, including rock-throwing, arson, shootings and attacks targeting Jewish farmers, shepherds, travelers and IDF soldiers.

Mellet also challenged the presentation of footage shown to Huckabee by local ambulance personnel. He claimed that videos were selectively edited and argued that the full footage would show a different picture of an incident involving an ambulance and Israeli military vehicle. According to Mellet, the ambulance had blocked an IDF vehicle while a crowd threw rocks at soldiers, forcing the troops to maneuver out of the area.

The controversy intensified after Mellet himself entered a security vehicle to investigate a suspicious gathering of vehicles near his community. He said the response from Huckabee’s delegation and accompanying media portrayed the local Jewish residents as the aggressors, without providing the broader security context.

Mellet concluded by warning that carefully staged meetings and photo opportunities should not obscure the reality faced by residents living near Turmus Ayya. He said he continues to receive threats from people in the area invoking the murder of his brother.

It is also important to note that Huckabee has generally been viewed as a strong and outspoken supporter of Israel and Jewish communities, making the episode particularly striking to many of his supporters. Rather than reflecting a broader change in his position, the criticism appears to center on what some believe was a serious error in judgment during a highly managed diplomatic visit — one in which the local figures and information presented to him may not have provided the full picture.
