Avigdor Liberman, one of the veterans of the political scene after years in junior roles, is this time aiming to capture the role of Prime Minister of Israel — and he is laying the groundwork for it.

Sunday evening, Liberman held a campaign rally, at which he was introduced to the hall as “the next Prime Minister of the State of Israel,” and all the speeches presented him as the next Prime Minister of Israel.

Liberman has said in closed conversations that he has all the experience necessary to serve as Prime Minister — and that after Bennett and Lapid, who each held the role, this time it’s his turn.

On paper, Liberman refuses to declare that he supports Eisenkot for the role of Prime Minister after the elections, but says that after the elections he will deal with the matter.

In practice, Liberman plans to demand the premiership under any circumstance, positioning his party as the one that will be the deciding factor. If Eisenkot is chosen, he will demand a rotation on the premiership, on the grounds that Eisenkot does not yet have experience. And if Netanyahu comes close to a majority, Liberman will agree to complete a government for him — on condition that he goes first in the rotation for Prime Minister.
