A new NYC sanitation rule that has been in place since June is moving into full enforcement tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8.
The Department of Sanitation requires households in properties with 1 to 9 residential units to place their trash in a proper bin with a secure lid. Loose trash and garbage bags left directly on the sidewalk will no longer be collected.
The requirement officially took effect on June 1, 2026, but the city gave residents the summer to adjust. During the warning period, properties that did not comply received warnings rather than monetary penalties.
That period ends today. Starting tomorrow, September 8, DSNY will begin issuing fines for violations.
Trash: Must be placed in a bin no larger than 55 gallons with a secure lid.
Recycling: Continues to go in the designated recycling container or clear bag.
Organics: Continue to be separated and placed out according to DSNY’s composting rules.
The requirement for a specific NYC Bin applies to trash. Residents may use other suitable containers for recycling and organics.
The first violation can result in a $50 fine, with higher penalties for subsequent violations.
Official NYC Bins are available at participating Home Depot locations throughout the city, and can also be ordered for delivery.
