At the Canfield Fair in Ohio Sunday, police arrested a man after he shoved his way in a threatening manner toward the Democratic Ohio gubernatorial candidate, Amy Acton, who is Jewish. Police found two handguns and a set of brass knuckles in his possession, although he didn’t brandish any weapons during the attack.

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday evening the arrest of 38-year-old Patrick Havas, who had pushed his way into a Democratic Party tent where Acton was delivering remarks. According to the sheriff’s office, Havas at first began recording the speech on his cell phone, but when he began shoving his way forward, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers confronted him and arrested him. Two people were knocked down during the confrontation, and Havas was taken into custody by Canfield Fair police.

Detectives said the case remains under investigation and charges would be filed following a consultation with the Mahoning County Prosecutor.

Addie Bullock, communications director for the Acton campaign, issued a statement following the incident.

“While attending the Canfield Fair, an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people,” she said.

“This kind of violence has no place in Ohio,” she added. “Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another.”

Acton’s Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, condemned the attack in a statement, and his spokesperson said that “candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence. What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope that no one was hurt.”

If elected, Acton will be the first Jewish governor and the second woman to govern the state that became the 17th one to join the United States on March 1, 1803.
