Israel announced Tuesday that it will close Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem, escalating a diplomatic confrontation after London unveiled restrictions targeting Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Israel would also exclude Britain from the U.S.-led Gaza coordination mission operating in Israel, end British training of Palestinian Authority security forces and bar selected British officials and other nationals from entering the country. The response was coordinated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The British consulate serves as London’s diplomatic representation to the Palestinian Authority. Its proposed closure extends the dispute beyond trade, directly affecting Britain’s regional diplomatic role.

Britain’s measures include banning imports from Israeli settlements and prohibiting companies from providing related services, including financing, construction, infrastructure, real estate and advertising. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the policy was intended to preserve the possibility of a Palestinian state.

Miliband also accused Israeli settlers of carrying out ethnic cleansing with government backing. Sa’ar rejected those allegations as “outrageous lies” and accused Britain of interfering in Israel’s sovereign affairs and electoral process.

The British trade restrictions are expected to require six to nine months to implement. France and Canada also announced plans to block settlement imports, widening the diplomatic pressure on Israel.
