NEW YORK (VINnews) — Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is within four points of Gov. Kathy Hochul in a new poll, putting the challenger within striking distance in this year’s New York governor’s race.

The McLaughlin & Associates survey, conducted for the Blakeman campaign, found Hochul leading Blakeman 49.6% to 45.7% among likely voters, with 4.7% undecided. The poll surveyed 800 likely voters from Aug. 27-31.

The results, reported by the New York Post, show Blakeman with a significantly smaller deficit than a Siena College poll released last month, which had Hochul ahead 49% to 39%.

The McLaughlin poll also found that 55% of likely voters viewed Hochul unfavorably, while 56% said it was time to give someone else a chance to lead the state, according to the Post.

Blakeman holds leads over Hochul in the suburbs and upstate, according to the poll, but trails substantially in New York City, where Hochul leads 60% to 33%.

With nearly two months remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the poll indicates that Blakeman has a path to make the race competitive, although the survey was commissioned by his campaign and another recent independent poll showed Hochul with a larger lead.
