LONDON (VINnews) – Britain’s Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis issued a powerful condemnation Tuesday of the government’s new sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, declaring: “This is truly a dark day for British Jews.”

Mirvis is one of the most prominent Jewish religious leaders in Britain and serves as chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. Mirvis accused the British government of ignoring the deep concerns raised by Jewish communal leaders and warned that the sanctions could have consequences far beyond their stated political purpose.

He said the measures amount to political posturing that could reinforce anti-Israel rhetoric and, rather than confronting extremism, could actually strengthen it.

The timing, Mirvis warned, makes the decision particularly troubling. With Rosh Hashanah approaching, he said the Jewish community is already facing an increasingly hostile environment and is more vulnerable to extremism than at any point in recent years.

Mirvis said the sanctions do nothing to advance peace and do not make anyone safer — “quite the contrary.”

He warned that repeated punitive measures and increasingly hostile rhetoric toward Israel can contribute to a broader climate in which people who use hatred against Jews feel increasingly emboldened.

The chief rabbi’s comments came after he and other senior Jewish communal figures urged the government not to proceed with the measures. Despite those objections, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband defended the sanctions and rejected the argument that they place British Jews at greater risk.

Mirvis’ intervention therefore represents more than a disagreement over British foreign policy. It is a warning from Britain’s chief rabbi that the government’s actions toward Israel could have real consequences for the security and atmosphere surrounding British Jews, particularly as the community prepares for the High Holidays.
