In an interview with Israel-based outlet JNS Tuesday, Israeli Ambassador to Canada Iddo Moed warned that Canadian sanctions on Judea and Samaria could trigger attacks against Canadian Jews, putting their lives in danger.

Moed spoke to the outlet shortly after the leaders of Canada, France, and the United Kingdom released a joint statement affirming their support for the two-state solution, noting that they had already recognized a Palestinian state a year prior. They stated that honoring their commitment meant sanctioning the Israeli population in Judea and Samaria for building settlements that they claimed are illegal under international law.

“Systematic settlement expansion in the West Bank, including the Government of Israel’s latest decision to progress the E1 settlement, as well as the dramatic increase in settler violence, pose a direct and urgent threat to that vision for peace,” the statement read.

“Settlements are illegal under international law. Canada, France, and the UK will therefore take steps to ban the importation of goods from settlements and enforce targeted measures against settlements and those who facilitate them or profit from them,” the leaders declared.

Moed, who has been serving as ambassador for the past three years, told JNS that he’s “concerned about the safety of the Jewish community, not just Israelis but the entire Jewish community in Canada.”

He said that anti-Israel groups are already celebrating this as a victory.

“When they are celebrating, normally they would go and intimidate more,” he said. “They feel more emboldened to intimidate the Jewish community. This is what antisemitism looks like.”

He said that it’s “very concerning” when leaders don’t see the connection between their anti-Israel actions and the antisemitic attacks that follow.

“We have seen over the past three years how quickly people take criticism against Israel to attack and intimidate the Jewish community of Canada,” he said. “Such decisions by the government definitely give more room for those to act, and I don’t hear anything from the government trying to create proportion or to balance things out internally.”

He said that while the Inuit have 20 words for snow (arriving at the actual number is complicated), the Israelis have a lot of words for security.

“It’s hard to get people to understand what we are talking about,” he told JNS. “When something walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we say that’s a very dangerous duck. You have to be ready to take action.”

The diplomat also warned that the measures against Judea and Samaria will do nothing to advance the two-state solution.
