WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews) — House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that Republicans are working to lower costs for American workers and families and pledged to stop what he described as a Democratic push toward communism.

“Republicans are working hard every day to lower costs and make life easier for American workers and families,” Johnson wrote on X. “We’ll keep fighting for common sense and REFUSE to let Democrats lead us down the dangerous, dark road to communism.”

The post included a clip of Johnson’s appearance Tuesday on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show,” where the Louisiana Republican discussed affordability, midterm messaging and how Republicans should respond to socialist politics. On-screen topics during the interview included a White House draft proposal to pay stay-at-home parents, the job market for workers without college degrees and the November elections.

Johnson’s comments track a message he has used for months as House Republicans try to frame the midterms as a choice between what he calls “common sense” and “communism.” He has argued that a wave of Democratic Socialists of America-aligned candidates winning Democratic primaries shows the party is shifting toward policies he says include abolishing prisons, defunding police, weakening borders and expanding government control of the economy.

“This is a ‘contrast for America year,’” Johnson said earlier this month. “It’s a contrast between common sense and crazy, and now common sense and communism.”

Democrats have rejected that characterization, saying Republican leaders are inflating the influence of the party’s left flank to distract from kitchen-table issues and the congressional calendar. Johnson posted the remarks as House Republicans are spending much of the fall campaigning. Leadership recently canceled the chamber’s final two scheduled workweeks in September, leaving a brief mid-month session before members leave Washington until after the Nov. 3 midterms.

Johnson, R-La., has said House Republicans will campaign on tax cuts, energy production, border security and lower household costs while arguing that a Democratic-controlled Congress would take the country in the opposite direction.
