NEW YORK (VINnews) — Police are asking the public for help identifying a man accused of knocking a Jewish man’s yarmulke off his head in an unprovoked attack in Lower Manhattan in May.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force said a 39-year-old man was struck from behind as he entered a business near Whitehall Street and Stone Street about 1 p.m. on May 5. The attacker slapped the victim’s yarmulke off his head. The skullcap fell to the ground. No injuries were reported, police said.

The suspect fled on foot after the incident, which occurred at 1 Whitehall Street, a building that houses a Duane Reade pharmacy and a post office.

Police released photos of the suspect Tuesday evening. He is described as having a dark complexion, short or possibly shaved hair and a moderate build. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a gray camouflage tracksuit, a black flat-brim snapback hat and white sneakers. He was also carrying a black-and-gray crossbody bag and a black plastic bag.

The department classified the case as a hate crime and is seeking the public’s assistance.
