The Village of Spring Valley is preparing to launch an extensive catch basin cleaning effort across multiple areas of the village, aimed at clearing drainage systems following a rainy summer and to prepare for the upcoming winter season.

The additional cleaning comes after months of heavy rainfall, along with significant construction activity throughout the village, both of which can leave catch basins filled with dirt and other buildup that can interfere with proper drainage.

To carry out the work on a larger scale, the village teamed up with an outside company that will work together with the Department of Public Works to clean a number of catch basins throughout Spring Valley. DPW officials and the company met Wednesday morning to review the work and coordinate the locations and process, with cleaning expected to begin immediately. Village officials say the work is expected to take approximately two to three weeks to complete.

The cleaning effort is especially important before winter, when snow, ice, and melting conditions can place additional pressure on local drainage systems and clogged basins can quickly create problems on village streets.

“After the heavy rain we experienced over the summer, and with winter now approaching, it is important that we give these catch basins the extra attention they need,” Village of Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Yisroel Eisenbach told Rockland Daily. “We are looking forward to carry out this additional cleaning effort and make sure the village is as prepared as possible for the winter months ahead.”

Village Trustee Yakov Yosef Kaufman said in a statement, “This cleaning effort is part of our continued work to stay on top of the village’s infrastructure and make sure our streets are ready for the upcoming winter. We want to be proactive, address these areas before issues arise, and make sure the village is properly prepared for the months ahead.”
