Passenger Killed After Tesla Crashes Into Midtown Manhattan Scaffolding
NEW YORK (VINnews) — A 27-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday when a Tesla in which she was a passenger crashed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan, police said.
The gray 2024 Tesla Model Y was traveling east on East 42nd Street shortly before 3 a.m. when it struck a mailbox, a sidewalk shed outside 315 Madison Ave. and a bus stop, according to the New York Police Department. The vehicle continued several blocks before coming to a stop at the intersection of East 42nd Street and Second Avenue.
Both occupants were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead, police said. The driver, also a 27-year-old woman, was in stable condition and in police custody. She had not been charged as of Wednesday morning, and authorities said charges were pending. Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.
Police did not say what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The investigation was continuing. East 42nd Street remained closed west of Second Avenue as officers examined the wreckage.
No other injuries were immediately reported.
