Numerous streets throughout Boro Park will be closed to vehicular traffic on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, for the first time ever, accommodating the thousands of residents who traditionally fill the neighborhood’s streets on Yom Tov night.

The closures, first discussed during a recent Community Board 12 meeting ahead of the High Holidays, have now been finalized by Community Board 12 in coordination with community partners at the NYPD, Shomrim, and Chaveirim.

The first night of Rosh Hashanah brings particularly heavy pedestrian traffic to Boro Park, as thousands walk after davening to visit Rebbes and Rabbanim, while families make their traditional visits to parents and grandparents to exchange wishes for a good and sweet new year.

With the entire community traveling by foot, sidewalks and streets across the neighborhood become exceptionally crowded throughout the evening. The planned closures will provide additional space for pedestrians and help ensure safer movement through the busiest areas.

The streets designated exclusively for pedestrians will include 14th and 15th Avenues between 47th and 51st Streets, as well as 48th, 49th, and 50th Streets between 13th and 16th Avenues.

The initiative comes one year after a similar arrangement was implemented in Williamsburg, where Bedford Avenue was closed to traffic on Rosh Hashanah night to accommodate the thousands of pedestrians traveling through the neighborhood.
