When you’re driving along the BQE, you may have gotten used to seeing the colorful water tower standing above Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The unusual structure, with its bright panels that look almost like stained glass, has been a familiar sight along the BQE and Brooklyn Heights Promenade for more than a decade. It’s also the kind of landmark that parents have pointed out to their kids while passing by.
The artwork, known as Watertower 3: R.V. Ingersoll, was taken down last week as renovation work is set to begin at the Brooklyn Bridge Park administrative building at 334 Furman Street.
Created by artist Tom Fruin, the water tower was installed on the roof in 2014. The plexiglass and steel structure will be refurbished while the building undergoes renovations.
The artwork is expected to return to the rooftop by next fall, bringing the familiar splash of color back to the BQE.
