Governor Sherrill Praises Supreme Court Ruling Blocking Trump Mail-In Voting Restrictions
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill on Tuesday praised a U.S. Supreme Court decision that blocked the Trump administration from imposing new restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections.
The Supreme Court on Monday declined to allow the administration to immediately implement rules that would have required states to comply with new federal requirements for mailed ballots, including standardized ballot envelopes and the submission of voter information through a federal system. Lower courts had previously blocked the requirements, and the Supreme Court’s action means states can continue operating under their existing vote-by-mail procedures while the legal challenges continue. Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented from the decision.
“States run elections, not Donald Trump,” Sherrill said in a statement Tuesday. She said the ruling reinforces her position that vote-by-mail is “a safe, secure, and reliable way to vote,” and argued that the Constitution gives states authority over the administration of elections.
Sherrill described the decision as a victory for New Jersey voters and criticized President Trump’s effort to change mail-in voting rules.
Trump, meanwhile, criticized the Supreme Court’s decision Tuesday and defended his administration’s push for tighter mail-ballot requirements, arguing that the changes were necessary to strengthen election security.
The ruling comes as election officials across the country are preparing for the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, with mail ballots already being distributed in some states.
