Two New Jersey municipal water systems were targeted in cyberattacks as part of a broader campaign against water infrastructure across the United States, prompting a response from state and federal cybersecurity officials.
The attacks targeted internet-connected industrial control systems used to remotely monitor and operate equipment such as pumps and valves. The affected utilities temporarily lost the ability to remotely monitor or control portions of their systems and switched to manual operations.
Officials said there was no disruption to water service and the safety of the drinking water was not compromised. Both systems were subsequently secured with strengthened access controls.
The incidents were later identified as affecting water facilities in Cape May and Woodbine, with the attacks occurring on July 27.
The FBI and other federal agencies have been investigating the broader campaign. Iranian-linked actors have been considered a possible source of the attacks, though federal authorities have not publicly made a definitive attribution.
