Readers Write: Abusing Sirens Can Cost Lives

Dear Editors,

It’s the busy season, and the streets of Boro Park are packed. We’re all sitting in traffic. Nobody enjoys it, but it’s part of life. Honking won’t make the cars disappear, and getting angry won’t open the street.

But tonight, while sitting in heavy traffic, I witnessed something that really disturbed me.

Suddenly, sirens came from behind. Drivers became nervous, horns started blasting, and everyone struggled to clear a path.

After several minutes, the vehicle finally got through, after everyone moved aside to make way. Then, the sirens just went off and the vehicle continued normally.

If those sirens were being used simply to beat traffic, this is not just wrong - it is dangerous.

Every unnecessary siren teaches drivers to take the next one less seriously. And the next one may be a real ambulance racing to a heart attack or firefighters rushing to a burning home.

Sirens are meant to save lives, not save time.

Traffic is frustrating. We all want to get home. But nobody’s convenience is worth weakening the meaning of a siren.

A siren needs to mean one thing: Move. There is an emergency.

This abuse needs to stop before someone pays the price.

Moishe F.
