New Yorkers looking to make some extra money this winter can earn $30 an hour shoveling snow for the city, with overtime paying $45 an hour after 40 hours in a week.
The Department of Sanitation is making the $30 starting rate standard for emergency snow shovelers this winter, following the temporary pay increase offered during last winter’s major storms.
New Yorkers who register before November 30 will be eligible for a paid four-hour orientation in December and faster payroll processing, with the city paying workers within two weeks after they work.
Emergency snow shovelers are called in after major snowstorms to clear areas including bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and step streets.
More than 7,800 New Yorkers joined the program during last winter’s storms.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, authorized to work in the United States and able to perform heavy physical work in winter conditions.
