Expect Heavy Traffic and Road Closures in Manhattan During UN General Assembly
By Y.M. Lowy
New York City is preparing for heightened security, major street closures and heavy traffic as world leaders arrive in Manhattan for the United Nations General Assembly.
The high-level General Debate begins Friday, September 18, and runs through September 28, with the UN General Assembly’s main debate scheduled for September 22 through 28.
Drivers should expect significant delays, particularly on the East Side and around the United Nations. First Avenue is expected to be closed between 42nd and 48th Street, with restrictions on nearby cross streets and rolling closures on the FDR Drive as motorcades carrying world leaders move through the city.
The exact closures will be announced 48 to 72 hours in advance and may change daily depending on the movements of visiting heads of state.
NYC DOT is urging New Yorkers and visitors to avoid driving in Manhattan during the week and use public transportation or other non-driving options when possible. Traffic speeds in Midtown during UN General Assembly week are historically among the slowest of the year, averaging less than four miles per hour.
Security will also be increased throughout Manhattan as officials prepare for the arrival of numerous foreign leaders and large diplomatic delegations.
