Trump Administration Drops Latest Gateway Tunnel Appeal; Gov. Sherrill Calls It “Big Victory” for New Jersey
The Trump administration has dropped its latest appeal seeking to block federal funding for the $16 billion Gateway Tunnel Project connecting New Jersey and New York, ending its challenge to a June federal court ruling that found the withholding of funds violated the law.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill welcomed the development Friday, calling it “a big victory for millions of New Jersey commuters” and pointing to the nearly 100,000 jobs the state says the project will create.
“The Trump Administration has tried, over and over again, to illegally stop the funding for the nation’s most urgent infrastructure project,” Sherrill said. “We took them to court and we won for New Jerseyans, five times. I won’t stop fighting until this project is built.”
The Gateway project is designed to construct a new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River and rehabilitate the existing century-old North River Tunnel used by trains traveling between New Jersey and New York City.
